Recycling of bottom ash from biomass combustion in porcelain stoneware tiles: Effects on technological properties, phase evolution and microstructure

This work aims to evaluate the use of bottom biomass ash as an alternative raw material in porcelain stoneware bodies. For this purpose, coming from a thermoelectric power plant Emilia-Romagna (Italy) was selected and its chemical, mineralogical thermal properties determined. Data indicated technological role flux, so it introduced batch partial replacement feldspars experimented at laboratory scale. A bottleneck, relative rheological behavior slips, overcome by slight deflocculant increase. The powder compacts were fired 1000° 1220 °C order follow evolution properties, phase composition (XRPD-Rietveld) microstructure (SEM). introduction allowed lower firing temperature 20 °C, while keeping comparable with those benchmark. Moreover, microstructural data revealed different sintering kinetics.
